Pagan artefacts have been recovered from this site, indicating that it was probably settled in the 6th century. Coins have been found, and none date later than A.D. 869, which suggests that the settlement was abandoned in the second half of the 9th century. Nearby springs would have supplied water and the soil is light and well drained, making it easy to plough. |
