The crooked sixpence
In the past,a young man wishing to gain the
affections of a young lady, would bend a
coin, usually a worn sixpence, and give it to
her as a love token. If she wasn't interested
in him it was thrown away, hence the rhyme....
There was a crooked man who walked a crooked mile,he found a crooked
sixpence beside a crooked stile.....
