During the Napoleonic wars, regal silver
coins were in short supply.
The introduction of a token coinage
issued by private companies, traders
etc, helped to alleviate the situation.

This one shilling silver token, minted
for the Whitby association of
merchants, depicts the towns coat of
arms, three ammonites within a shield.
