There have been numerous debates about metal detecting and the professional archaeologists who oppose us. In fact there should be no conflict Arguments about damage to stratification, nighthawking, and looting aside (claims which can be misleading, but activities we must nevertheless condemn) detectorists have made an unparalleled impact on our understanding of the quantity, variety, and distribution of ancient coins and metal artefacts. Add to this the fact that the vast majority of treasure found in britain results from the use of metal detectors, it is not difficult to see that in the hands of responsible and experienced users it is a unique and indispensable archaeological tool. A number of television programmes have popularized archaeology, and rightly so, but recognition must be given to metal detectorists who have contributed so significantly to our knowledge of the past. Some may argue that my involvement with the hobby has given me a blinkered perspective. To this I would reply 'let the facts speak for themselves' |
